Marriages and divorces
The number of registered partnerships in the Netherlands increased explosively during 2021, with a year-on-year increase of 8.3%. Compared to the average of the previous decade, this number has almost doubled. Growth took a big boost from May onwards, after the end of the lockdown. Not only are these figures growing, but the number of relationship terminations is also much higher.
The number of marriages in 2020 fell by 21% year-on-year, a sharp drop due to the impossibility of holding celebrations. The year 2021 closes with more than 56,000 marriages, although this represents an increase over 2020 of 11.7%, it is still below pre-pandemic figures. The latest available data for February is that the trend is still upwards with a total number of marriages of 4083 (62% increase compared to February 2021).
Not only did the pandemic bring marriages to a standstill, divorces were also affected in 2020, that figure fell below 30,000 for the first time in a decade. In 2021, a new all-time low seems to have been reached with 25,600 separations. 2022 continues the downward trend and February closes with a 15.6% decrease compared to the same month of the previous year.
